Sometimes bartenders get involved with customer service issues that they should stay away from. I’m not telling you to throw the manager under the bus, but be aware that there are certain things that the manager should be handling.
Most chain restaurants and bars will contract with a “spotter” company. Count on it. It may be internal, but you can bet they send out people on a regular basis to observe employees – and check up on their managers.
Make no mistake – customer service is a HUGE part of the bartender’s job. And, you can bet that bar owners want to make sure you know what it is – and what qualifies as great customer service.
Professional bartenders know how to suggestive sell. Period. Raising the guest check average, increasing gross profits, and suggesting alternative food and beverage menu items to their customers all combine to create a better customer experience – and keep the bar owner happy.
Tips are a big part of a bartender’s salary. Usually more than 50% – in a good place. Concentrate on great customer service and you’ll never worry about tips again.
